The Father Figures CD Release Show

Posted In: Rock, Skate

After a four month delay due to a a broken wrist The Father Figures recorded and released their second album “All About Everything”.  The CD release show was at the Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix; a fabulous venue for live music.  The night opened with the last show by Vellum.  Their set of garage rock with a side of psychedelica was truly a jaw dropping experience.  How can a band so good not play anymore.  It’s sad but I was damn glad I was there to hear it.  The Smoke Bombs played their debut set at the show.  This band is Chris Yeoman’s project after the split from Asses of Evil.  They played a tight set of bombastic punk rock in the vein of early Clash or Social Distortion.  The Father Figures played all the songs from their new CD plus a few old ones.  For three songs Bill Goethe joined on second guitar to add some extra oomph.

I’ve got a video of Transparent for you:

Also a video of Caviar:

And a slide show.

Zeusgun Blasts Out Their Debut Show

Posted In: Rock

Zeusgun is a new trio featuring Rob Shipp on bass, Gary Ammann on drums and Jarrod “Kid Dynamite” Compton on guitar. They all take a turn at singing the lead vocals and that mixes the sound up pretty well. Having formed this past summer and supporting a blues singer for a few gigs, Zeusgun came together as a punky, blues-fueled garage band. For their debut show they crammed into a corner of the tiny Bikini Lounge for a full evening of rocking.  Kid Dynamite positively chokes the frantic but sweet-toned riffs from his big hollow-bodied Gretch while Rob and Gary hold down the punchy rhythm section. Local skaters will know Rob from his many decades slashing lines at the local skate spots. You can find Zeusgun on Facebook and see more about Rob’s skate history on the AZPX web site.

Nova Boys Reunion at The Kevin Daly Tribute

Posted In: Random

Al Penzone has been working on a Kevin Daly Tribute album for almost two years. After the release of three CD’s worth of songs covering Kevin’s music from a wide variety of bands Al capped it off with a fantastic show at the Yucca Tap Room.  You can read more about the show and the tribute project at the Daly Dogpile.  A real highlight of the night was the reunion of The Nova Boys who were a core part of Phoenix’s early punk scene.  Although they had not played together since 1986 they threw down a set of raw punk fueled roots rock that satisfied the crowd.

X Live

Posted In: Rock

I got to play with X recently at The Crescent Ballroom.  A fabulous venue for a show by the way.  X was great.  They played for almost two hours but it still seemed like a short set.  Here is a video of one song from the set and a few pictures.

JFA Back in Action

Posted In: Rock

After a year off while their front man Brian Brannon served in Afghanistan JFA is now back in action.  Their recent show mark 30 years of punk rock and skateboarding.  Here are videos from their recent show in Orange County. Fittingly the show was shut down due to a general abundance of punk attitude.

The next night they played at the party for the PHX AM contest. Before heading back to OC Brian and Carter got down on the burly terrain of the Goodyear skatepark.
